Westminster Gardens Retirement Community

The History of Westminster Gardens

A Story of Faith That Reaches Out to All Persons

Westminster Gardens is a testament to gratitude, generosity and faith. It all began in 1948 with a gift of one million dollars from Mr. Frank Shu, a successful businessman who had received an education in China by William C. Booth, a Presbyterian missionary. Mr. Shu’s generosity enabled the Presbyterian Church to acquire property for a very special retirement community. His vision was that of a comfortable, affordable, and secure haven for missionaries and others who had led lives of faithful service in the Church.

The Ranch property in Duarte was purchased from the Morrison family in December of 1950. It included the main house, swimming pool and tennis court, and several small homes. These small homes were occupied immediately by the first residents, making the dream of a unique retirement community a reality.

Since 1950, more than 800 individuals from all over the globe have built a unique climate of intellectual and leadership opportunities. This active participation and spiritual journey has created a retirement oasis unlike any other community.

Welcoming Others

For 52 years, only Presbyterian Church professionals over the age of 65 were eligible to live in this Garden Oasis. In July of 2002, the Westminster Gardens Board of Trustees and the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church voted to broaden the invitation.

Regardless of race, religion, profession or church denomination, individuals as young as 60, who meet the financial, medical and eligibility requirements and wish to live in this faith filled community, are welcomed.

Vitality in Retirement

Assisted and Independent Living in Duarte, California

It is the residents that have always made Westminster Gardens a special and vital community. We encourage cultural and ethnic diversity, attention to the arts, development of one’s talents and a casual lifestyle. Our residents participate in many avenues of caring and involvement both inside and outside of this retirement oasis. We affirm such activity for those who are thus inclined and able. We offer and encourage participation in the life and work of our campus.
